Days 8-11 Steamboat Springs Ski Trip
Rifle, Colorado
Steamboat Springs, Colorado
Next was our unforgettable and utterly redemptive ski trip to Steamboat Springs - we had such a blast! As a reminder, this was our second attempt at a previously failed mini-moon ski trip we took in 2020, just 8 days after our nuptials. In March of 2020, we had one glorious day on the slopes before all Colorado ski mountains shut down due to the explosive rise of COVID outbreaks in the U.S. and the beginning of the pandemic lockdowns and mandatory quarantine in the states.
While COVID is still ubiquitous and unrelenting, almost 2 years later the pandemic is subjectively controlled and with proper safety precautions and preventive measures - we were all able to safely enjoy ourselves and this wonderful outdoor adrenaline rush!
Before I share a video recap of our ski trip - here are a few highlights and tidbits on what you’ll see in the video!
Connecting with Atlanta Friends: We got to meet up with our friend Brian and his son Finn and sister, Summer for dinner on our first night in Steamboat (and on our 2nd night, Bree - Brian’s girlfriend joined us too!) Brian, Finn, Summer (and her 2 adorable dogs) and Brian’s girlfriend Bree are living in the RV park in Steamboat Springs in an awesome tiny house living-esque RV that they brought from Atlanta, GA.
Ski Upgrade for Tom: Tom got new skis for the first time! He’s struggled with pressure points and discomfort time and again when he’s rented boots in the past. He finally pulled the trigger and invested in a brand spankin’ new pair customfit and optimized for his feet and stance.
Strawberry Park Hot Springs: On our day off in between our 2 days of skiing, we took a repeat trip to our favorite hot springs - Strawberry Park - about 25 minutes outside the ski town of Steamboat. The 5 available springs range from 98 - 104 degrees and there is an icy cold river that feeds into the hot springs and is available for the brave souls who want to take the polar plunge of a lifetime.
Arizona College Student Takeover: While Tom and I only skied 2 days, we found out we were outnumbered by a massive ski trip of about 700 college students from universities in Arizona and other parts of the Southwest. Many of them were first timers! But they were all nice to talk to and excited to be on the slopes so it seemed like a cool program for the students in participating colleges in the Southwest.
Fresh Powder Whiteout Ski Day with Brian: A great coincidence of timing enabled us to connect with our friend from Atlanta, Brian - for a final day of fresh pow pow skiing and snowboarding. We enjoyed whiteout conditions, and while at times challenging, it was mostly thrilling and produced a fluffy white covering across all of the slopes for the day. I officially became a fan of powder snowboarding on this day! It was well worth the 2-year wait to come full circle with this ski trip. We capped it all off with a soak in the hot tub and a hearty burger and beer before calling it a night!
